When is a crown or bridge needed?

Crowns and bridges are both made in a similar way, but serve different functions.

A dental crown (or cap) is a protective covering for a tooth that may have been damaged, worn down or weakened by a dental injury, severe tooth decay, or following a dental procedure such as root canal treatment.

Crowns can be an alternative to a Composite (White) Fillings when not enough of the tooth's structure remains. They may also be chosen for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of worn, discoloured or misshapen teeth.

A dental bridge is an artificial tooth that fills the gap left by a tooth following an injury or extraction. If you're missing one or several teeth, a bridge can restore the appearance of your smile, help you to eat and speak normally, and provide support for the teeth on each side so they don't shift.

Types of crowns

Crowns were traditionally made from gold or a metal amalgam, but these are less popular today for their unnatural appearance and safety concerns. Our dentists in Moranbah offer a choice of crowns made from tooth-coloured porcelain or a mix of porcelain and metal if extra strength is needed.

If you're considering a crown for aesthetic reasons, an alternative could be porcelain veneers.

Types of bridges

Bridges can also be made of porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, ensuring a natural appearance. Depending on where the missing tooth or teeth are located in your mouth, a bridge may be supported by crowns fitted over one or both surrounding teeth or clasps attached to the back of teeth.

Alternatives to a dental bridge are a partial denture or implant.

How are crowns and bridges made?

Our dentists will explain what's involved in getting a crown or bridge so you can decide if it's the right choice for you.

The first stage is to prepare the tooth or teeth on either side of the bridge for crowns by removing some of the enamel. We’ll then capture a digital impression of your mouth using our 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scan technology, avoiding the need for conventional dental impressions.

When your permanent crown and/or bridge is ready, we'll check that it fits correctly and bond it in place. Once fitted, you should avoid touching your crown or bridge and brush and floss around it carefully until it's fully bonded.
