When is a crown or bridge needed?
Crowns and bridges are both made in a similar way, but serve different functions.
A dental crown (or cap) is a protective covering for a tooth that may have been damaged, worn down or weakened by a dental injury, severe tooth decay, or following a dental procedure such as root canal treatment.
Crowns can be an alternative to a composite filling when not enough of the tooth's structure remains. They may also be chosen for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of worn, discoloured or misshapen teeth.
A dental bridge is an artificial tooth that fills the gap left by a tooth following an injury or extraction. If you're missing one or several teeth, a bridge can restore the appearance of your smile, help you to eat and speak normally, and provide support for the teeth on each side so they don't shift.
