Dentures

Modern dentures have come a long way from the false teeth of the past. If you want to replace a missing tooth, several teeth or all of your teeth, our dentists at Moranbah Dental can create realistic dentures that look, feel and function like natural teeth.

When are dentures needed?

Missing teeth can affect more than just your appearance. Teeth surrounding a gap can become crooked over time, while too many missing teeth can affect speech or your ability to eat normally and get the nutrition you need. Without support from teeth or dentures, muscles in the face can also start to sag, causing an aged appearance.

Dentures can replace teeth that have been lost or severely damaged by tooth decay, gum disease or other oral health conditions. Some people also choose dentures for cosmetic reasons to replace teeth that are worn, misshapen or discoloured.

If you only need to replace a single tooth or several teeth in a row, an alternative to dentures can be a dental bridge or implant. Our dentists will make sure you know all the options so you can make an informed decision.

What type of dentures do you need?

The type of dentures you need depends on how many teeth are missing and the material you prefer. Your dentures will be custom made to be a perfect fit and feel comfortable in your mouth.

  • Partial dentures – fill gaps in your smile where only some of your teeth are missing. Partial dentures are attached to natural teeth on both sides.
  • Complete dentures – complete or full dentures can replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or all the teeth in your mouth.

Dentures may be made from acrylic or chrome, depending on your preference and price range.

How are dentures fitted?

If you choose dentures at Moranbah Dental, our dentists will take impressions of your mouth and use these to design custom dentures that fit perfectly and feel comfortable to wear. If your needs are more complex, we may refer you to a prosthetist to make sure you receive the expert care you need.

To avoid problems such as dentures coming loose, we recommend waiting a few months after a tooth extraction before having dentures fitted. This allows time for the gums to heal and swelling to subside. If you need dentures immediately, we'll arrange regular check-ups so we can make any adjustments needed.

It can take a while to get used to the feeling of dentures, but most people adjust within a few weeks to a few months. It's important to clean your dentures every day and follow good oral hygiene to avoid problems, including regular dental check-ups.
