Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

Moranbah Dental follows the Australian Government's Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). If you have children aged 2 to 17 and you receive certain payments from Medicare, your kids could be eligible for free dental check-ups and general treatments at our clinic.

Read this short guide to find out:

  • If your child is eligible for CDBS
  • What treatments are covered
  • How to make a claim

Is my child eligible for CDBS?

Not all families are eligible for free kids' dental care. To access CDBS, you must be:

  • the parent, guardian or approved carer of a child aged 2 to 17 within the current calendar year
  • eligible for an approved Medicare payment received at least once per year

The eligible Medicare payments are:

  • ABSTUDY
  • Double Orphan Pension
  • Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A
  • Parenting Payment

Teenagers may also claim their own dental costs on CDBS or those of a teenager partner if they meet the requirements.

If you're still not sure whether you're eligible, call Medicare on 132 011 or find out more on the Services Australia website.

What dental costs are covered?

CDBS was designed to make routine dental visits more affordable for families. The scheme provides $1,052 per child over two consecutive calendar years to cover general and preventive children's dentistry. These include:

  • check-ups and teeth cleaning
  • dental x-rays
  • white fillings
  • fissure sealants
  • root canal therapy
  • extractions

More complex treatments such as orthodontic braces or hospital visits and services considered non-essential such as cosmetic dentistry are not covered by CDBS.

Our dentists will make sure you know what is and isn't covered so you can make informed decisions about your child's oral health and avoid surprises.

How do I make a claim?

If you want to claim kids' dental services on CDBS, it's important to notify us in advance. We'll let you know what services you can claim for and any other information that could affect your eligibility.

If you've already used some of your child's CDBS allowance, or you can't remember, you should check that you still have enough balance remaining. You can check this by logging into your online Medicare account, calling Medicare enquiries, or our staff can find out for you.

At our practice, we'll ask you to sign a consent form for our records detailing your child's dental costs and how much you're claiming on CDBS. We can then bulk bill your payment directly to Medicare, so you won't have to send off any forms yourself.

Your child's $1,052 free dental care covers two consecutive calendar years. At the end of this two-year period – if your child is still eligible – their CDBS balance will be reset to $1,052. It's important to note that this doesn't reset every year and you can't access any unused funds once the time is up.
